Germaine Greer on Steve Irwin
Sassy sister Germaine Greer has lived up to her reputation as a paradigm-busting provocateur with her observation in the Guardian that the stingray attack that killed the appalling Steve Irwin was nature's "revenge". My first reaction upon reading her analysis was "Spot on Germaine. Yougogirl!" But after consultation with my animal companion Jocelyn I had to deconstruct my opinion, and reconstruct it in a more Gaia-aware fashion.
You see, as Jocelyn reminded me, non-human persons don't take revenge. They are too placid and loving for that. Revenge is a trait unique to mankind. (And I do mean man kind -- a misnomer if ever there was one, because kind he is not! Like, shouldn't that be "manunkind"?)
And given that the stingray has been falsely accused (and falsely glorified by Germaine) the next question is: "So what really happened?" Could this be a ... right-wing ... conspiracy? I think so, fellow travellers.
I believe that much as the evil neo-cons brought down the twin towers so they could launch their appalling "war on terror" the Master of Evil and his diabolical henchpersons were behind this "accident" so that they could then exploit it socio-culturally by repeatedly eulogizing (and ultimately deifying) this "dinkum Aussie hero", this "larrikin", this "top bloke". With this racist, sexist, hyper-testosteroidal icono-idolatry hegemonically ultra-dominant, John HoWARd has succeeded in further diminishing the culture of tolerance and diversity that we on the left have worked so hard to nurture in this country.
Appalling. Just appalling.
